New Louis Buhl Editions
Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a new large-scale edition with artist Cody Hudson titled Sonic Landscape, Spatial Imagery and Emotion (Cloudbuster Redux). Hudson’s use of graphic lines and bright color inspire a story of longing and hope, while also finding context within contemporary abstract painting. The artist is interested in the elemental use of shape as a signifier, but goes further by allowing the forms to be direct extensions of the painting’s poetic content.
For the project, Hudson presents 35 regular edition prints, alongside a handful of unique variants to which he employed hand-embellished collaged elements atop the foundation. In Sonic Landscape, Spatial Imagery and Emotion (Cloudbuster Redux), Hudson extracts elements from the natural world and reimagines them into simplified geometric shapes that work together to form a harmoniously expressive composition. Employing bold blocks of color, the works are mutually informed by Hudson’s external environments and his internal reflections. Complete with abstract figuration illuminating nature’s impact on the mind, Sonic Landscape, Spatial Imagery and Emotion (Cloudbuster Redux) captures the artist’s vacillating feelings throughout the prints’ period of creation.
DIRECTION | INSTRUCTION - STRAAT Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands
STRAAT Gallery proudly presents ‘DIRECTION | INSTRUCTION’; a celebration of abstraction, alternative materials, composition, geometry and language as counterpoint expressions to the highly illustrative and representational work that identifies the global street art genre.
This marks the first instalment of this acclaimed group show in Europe, which features more than 25 contemporary artists from 11 different countries. The group includes such seminal design world heavyweights as Cody Hudson and Evan Hecox, as well as esteemed female artists such as former Juxtapoz cover artist, Mary Iverson, and muralist rockstars Anna Taratiel, Madi and Sandra Fettingis. Also included are several top-notch Dutch up-and-comers including Guido De Boer, Chinny Bond and machine painter Anti Goon. The exhibition catalogue will be available upon request. ‘DIRECTION | INSTRUCTION’ continues the gallery’s mission to highlight the diversity and prominence of global street art and mural culture.
In addition to the exhibition, several of the participating artists including Remi Rough, Bisco Smith, Anti Goon, Tony Van Amsterdam and Tomislav Topic will be adding large scale permanent works to STRAAT’s collection in the main hall.
Kind Words Show
To celebrate the You Are Beautiful sticker turning 20 this year, we've put together an exciting group show glowing with positivity & kindness in our gallery!
We’ve asked artists, designers, poets, & creatives to share their most inspiring kind words on the walls of our gallery. We couldn't be more honored to be sharing their work with you! (And we think you'll certainly want to take home a kind word or two).
Additionally our studio & wood shop will be open to the public. We only do this once or twice a year, so take advantage of getting to take a peek behind the curtain & see where it's all made! (Heck, there might even be some machines running that you’ll be able to see in action ;)
And of course we'll be previewing our YAB holiday collection, which will be available in store, to get your gift sharing season underway!
Want to contribute? 100% of your donation on Eventbrite will go directly towards our 2023 YAB For All Community Installation. Every year, we donate an installation to a community that might not otherwise be able to afford an installation. Learn more & nominate your community here: YABForAll.com

It Takes a Village Skatepark Fundraiser
Louis Buhl & Co. is thrilled to announce It Takes a Village, a one-night-only benefit exhibition spanning both Louis Buhl and sister gallery Library Street Collective’s walls and featuring over 70 participating artists to raise funds for the development of a permanent public skatepark in Detroit’s East Village neighborhood. The project led by Library Street Collective is in partnership with Jefferson East, Inc., a neighborhood non-profit organization that serves low-income populations on Detroit’s east side and five historic bordering neighborhoods.
The skatepark will open in spring 2023 alongside the Charles McGee Legacy Park and a retrospective on the late artist’s life and work at the Shepherd. Upon its completion, the skatepark will be fully accessible to the public. Says Joshua R. Elling, CEO of Jefferson East, Inc: "As Jefferson East works to revitalize the east Jefferson corridor, it is vital that residents have safe and engaging places to enjoy. The addition of this new skatepark will be an amazing amenity for residents—young and old, longtime Detroiters and visitors alike. Combined with the Charles McGee Legacy Park, this new public space will be a world-class amenity for all to enjoy."
With the help of NewLine Skateparks, Tony Hawk will lead the functional design of the park, while artist McArthur Binion will oversee elements of the artistic design. It was in 2017 that Library Street Collective first collaborated with Hawk to design and produce Wayfinding with Ryan McGinness, an installation and skatepark in downtown Detroit—this being just one of various skatepark projects Hawk has spearheaded throughout the city over the years. Hawk looks forward to continuing to activate the local community with this latest advancement: "I’m honored to partner with Anthony & JJ Curis and all of the participating artists to help bring this public skatepark to life. This community-focused project will be a perfect addition to Detroit’s East Village neighborhood."
It Takes a Village is also a celebration of Library Street Collective’s ten year anniversary, “a milestone we are honored to share with the community of artists who have shaped our mission and allow us to contribute crucial support to the creative renaissance of the city of Detroit,” says founder and partner Anthony Curis. “The occasion signifies a new chapter for the galleries as we enter our expansion into the East Village neighborhood, with plans along with the City of Detroit to designate the area as the city’s next cultural district. A soon-to-be fundamental component of this ambitious development, the skatepark will empower daily joy and play, while uniquely immersing the community in the greater world of art—Library Street Collective and Louis Buhl’s predominant goal since their inception.”
It Takes a Village will be on display for one night only on September 2, 2022 from 7 - 9 PM at Library Street Collective and Louis Buhl & Co. in downtown Detroit.
Featured artists include Tiffany Alfonseca, Daniel Arsham, Trudy Benson, Katherine Bernhardt, McArthur Binion, Morgan Blair, Greg Bogin, Judy Bowman, Davariz Broaden, Kelsey Brookes, Marcus Brutus, Cydney Camp, Canyon Castator, Ryan Travis Christian, Jake Clark, Allana Clarke, Richard Colman, Rosson Crow, Timothy Curtis, Heather Day, Sam Dienst, Michael Dotson, Sam Durant, Greg Fadell, FAILE, Shepard Fairey, Beverly Fishman, James Benjamin Franklin, Sam Friedman, FriendsWithYou, Olivia Guterson, Eric Haze, Jammie Holmes, Thrush Holmes, Cody Hudson, Todd James, Kaylie Kaitschuck, Sam Keller, Matthew King, Paul Kremer, Gary Lang, GE Liu, Geoff McFetridge, Charles McGee, Ryan McGinness, Zoe McGuire, Mario Moore, Robert Moreland, Jordan Nickel, Sheila Nicolin, KC Ortiz, José Parlá, Pedro Pedro, Cleon Peterson, Jason REVOK, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Ellen Rutt, Chris Schanck, Ryan Schneider, Eric Shaw, Adam Parker Smith, Willie Wayne Smith, Phillip K.
